Protecting the Right to Choose

Keep Me Posted EU is a key advocacy initiative co-founded by FEPE to protect citizens’ Right to Choose how they receive important communications. The initiative promotes a balanced and inclusive approach, ensuring that people can continue to receive information on paper, digitally, or through a combination of both — without penalties, disadvantages, or exclusion.

While recognising the benefits of digital solutions, Keep Me Posted EU highlights that digital-only systems can unintentionally exclude parts of society and undermine consumer choice. The initiative therefore works to ensure that Europe’s digital transition remains fair, inclusive, and respectful of individual preferences.

Why Choice Matters

Keep Me Posted EU is built on a simple principle: communication choice is essential for inclusion, accessibility, trust, and privacy. Many citizens, including older adults, people with disabilities, citizens in rural areas, individuals with limited digital skills, and those concerned about data protection, may face barriers when physical communication options are removed.

The initiative promotes the recognition of choice as a core element of inclusive policymaking, ensuring that essential communications such as bills, official documents, and public information remain accessible to all.

Key areas of action

Advocacy and Policy Engagement

Keep Me Posted EU actively engages with European institutions to ensure that the Right to Choose is considered in EU digital and administrative policies. The initiative supports evidence-based dialogue with policymakers, highlighting that exclusion is not only about access or skills, but also about personal preference, trust, and privacy.

A key milestone for the initiative was the presentation of the Why Choice Matters report at the European Parliament in Brussels, hosted by Members of the European Parliament.

The report underlined that many citizens consciously prefer non-digital formats for essential communications, and that this preference should be recognised in policymaking.

A second European Parliament event took place in November 2025, focusing on inclusive communication and the lessons drawn from the Why Choice Matters report.

This event also marked the launch of the #DearUrsula campaign, during which participants sent handwritten postcards to the President of the European Commission, calling for the protection of the Right to Choose in future EU policies.

The initiative demonstrated how paper-based and hybrid communication formats continue to play a vital role in accessibility and social inclusion.

Visibility, Outreach and Media

The initiative was featured in European media, including opinion and feature articles, helping to raise awareness of the risks associated with digital-only communication policies.

Towards the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, the initiative also gained attention in national and local newspapers, including interviews conducted in Slovenia, where the importance of communication choice was highlighted for a broader public audience.

Partnerships and Cooperation

As a co-founder of Keep Me Posted EU, FEPE plays an active role in shaping the initiative’s strategy and advocacy priorities. The initiative is supported by a broad coalition of stakeholders, including consumer organisations, civil society partners, and industry associations.

FEPE works closely with partner organisations such as CEPI, Intergraf, and PostEurop to strengthen the initiative’s credibility and impact. This collaborative approach reinforces a shared commitment to inclusive communication and ensures that the Right to Choose is supported by a diverse and representative group of organisations.

Get involved

FEPE invites all stakeholders who have not yet done so to support the initiative by signing the pledge, and to contribute to the collective effort to protect the Right to Choose. More information about the initiative and ways to get involved are available here.
